Media Framework License and Price Changes

in

After much thought and feedback, we have decided to change the license offerings for our ActionScript Media Framework. As of today, we are removing the compiled only version of the product and introducing multiple site licenses based on entity size.

The new license model:

  • $99 - Individual
  • $350 - Small Business (2 - 20 employees)
  • $895 - Midsize Business (21 -50 employees)
  • $1895 - Large Business (51+ employees)

Implications

What this means is that now everyone receives source code in addition to the components. This includes all existing compiled customers, who will now find source files available in their accounts. Instead of offering a single site license, we have broken the definition of site into multiple versions based on company size. This is done to help account for usage and growth. In many ways it is a mixture of a traditional site license and a volume seat license. From all the feedback we gathered, everyone felt that this model made the most sense. If you have any questions about this, please let us know.

Why

The decision to do this was based on where we want to take the framework and how we view our customers. By shifting to all source, we are able to push more than just a set of components at customers (especially with Flash CS3 and lower). Now we can provide more utility and experimental offerings. This allows us to put more elements in our code base and offer them up earlier they we might normally have. For example, one of the first elements you will see drop in is the media player code base. Given this type of release scenario, we will try to highlight what is baked and what is experimental. Overall, customers will definitely benefit.

All this said, the main reason for the shift is we want to enable customers and we want them to enable us. A lot of our best feedback comes from individual developers, so we don't want to hold back what we are doing. The more we can share together, the more we can move the interactive media space forward. Enabling is a big focus for us and this news release is not our final say on it ;).
